Your First Chiropractic Visit: What to Expect Step by Step

Dr. Jason Bang, DC, FNPMarch 19, 2026(Updated April 2, 2026)6 min read

Walking into a chiropractor's office for the first time can feel intimidating, especially if you do not know what to expect. Will it hurt? How long will it take? What if nothing is wrong? These are completely normal questions, and I hear them from new patients every week at our Valley, AL clinic. If safety is your main concern, read our guide on whether chiropractic care is safe — the short answer is yes, with an exceptionally low risk profile.

This guide walks you through every step of your first chiropractic visit so you feel prepared and confident. No surprises.

Before You Arrive

There are a few things you can do to make your first visit smoother:

  • Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely. Avoid jeans or restrictive outfits. Athletic wear or loose-fitting clothes work best
  • Write down your symptoms including when they started, what makes them better or worse, and any treatments you have already tried
  • Bring a photo ID so we can get you checked in quickly
  • List your medications including supplements. As an FNP, I review these for potential interactions
  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early to complete intake paperwork, or ask if you can fill it out online beforehand

Step 1: Health History and Intake

Your visit starts with a conversation. We want to understand not just where you hurt, but why you hurt. You will fill out a health history form covering your current symptoms, past injuries, surgeries, medical conditions, family history, and lifestyle factors like exercise, sleep, and stress levels.

Then we sit down and talk. I will ask you detailed questions about your pain: When did it start? Is it constant or does it come and go? Does it radiate to other areas? What have you tried? This conversation usually takes about 15-20 minutes and is one of the most important parts of your visit. The more detailed you are, the better I can diagnose and treat your condition.

Step 2: Physical Examination

After the health history, we move to a hands-on examination. This typically includes:

  • Posture analysis: We observe how you stand, sit, and walk. Uneven shoulders, head tilt, or hip imbalance can reveal spinal misalignment
  • Range of motion testing: We ask you to bend, twist, and move in specific ways to identify where movement is restricted
  • Palpation: Using our hands, we feel along your spine and muscles to find areas of tenderness, tightness, or misalignment
  • Orthopedic and neurological tests: Specific tests help us determine whether your pain involves nerve compression, disc issues, or joint problems
  • Muscle strength testing: We check for imbalances that might contribute to your pain

Step 3: Diagnosis and Treatment Plan

Based on your health history and physical examination, we explain exactly what we found. We walk you through where your spine is misaligned, which nerves may be affected, and how this connects to the symptoms you are experiencing. There are no vague explanations. You will leave understanding your condition clearly.

We then outline a personalized treatment plan that includes how many visits we recommend, what each visit will involve, exercises or lifestyle changes that support your recovery, and realistic expectations for how quickly you should improve. We never pressure patients into long-term treatment contracts. Your plan is based on your condition and goals.

Step 4: Your First Adjustment

If it is appropriate based on our findings, we may perform your first adjustment during this visit. Here is what you will experience:

You will lie on our adjustment table, which is a comfortable, padded surface designed specifically for chiropractic work. I will position your body to isolate the specific joint that needs correction. Then I will apply a quick, controlled thrust to that joint. You may hear a popping or cracking sound, which is completely normal. It is just gas releasing from the joint capsule, the same thing that happens when you crack your knuckles.

Most patients describe the adjustment as feeling like a deep stretch followed by immediate relief. It is rarely painful. If you are nervous, let us know and we can use gentler techniques or instrument-assisted adjustments that do not involve the traditional "crack."

After Your First Visit

Your first visit typically lasts 20-30 minutes. Subsequent visits are shorter, usually 10-15 minutes. After your first adjustment, you may feel immediately better, or you may feel slightly sore for 24-48 hours as your body adjusts to the new alignment. Both responses are normal. Wondering how many visits you will need? Our guide on how often you should see a chiropractor breaks down the typical treatment phases.

We will send you home with specific instructions: ice or heat recommendations, stretches to do between visits, posture tips, and what to watch for. We want you actively involved in your recovery, not just passively showing up for appointments.
